Featurific, a plug in for Wordpress, displays "featured items in a beautiful and professional flash gallery." It's like a fancy slide show. The basic version is free. You can customize slides with your own images and text. This would be a great way to show off your VIP's (very important posts)!
I first noticed Featurific on Blissfully Domestic's home page, where it's used to showcase articles. Click on the numbers (bottom left) and you'll be shown other titles and snippets:
