That is a good question as to whether it really does make a blog easier to read. It's one I've gone back and forth with on my blog: on livejournal, they are called "lj cuts," and you create them with some simple code at the beginning and end of whatever you want "under the cut." (You can also customize the text so it says something different than the default "read more.")

So, I know how to do them. :) However, as I expanded my reading into blogs on other platforms, I found it such a relief, as a reader, to have posts "right up front" and *not* have to keep clicking through. Plus, since they are not commony used elsewhere, I'm not sure if the general blog reader population has been "trained" to know how to use them.

So, I waffle between whether I do it or not. Some form of questions around this topic might make an interesting poll on blogcoach.

It's a tough call. A post has to have a REALLY good tease for me to click into it to read further.

I find the same to be true with feeds that don't include the entire article. I rarely click to see the rest of the story.

Still, it's a nice option to have available. Thanks for providing the idea.

Not something you want for every post, for sure. Judgment, as you say, is key. Bloggers need to figure out which is less appealing, the "read more" link or a long page of unbroken text?

A great tip! Thanks - I now know where to go if I start diving into really long posts. But I am curious what readers think about them. I think that it is something that each blogger needs to use judiciously - if you make a peekaboo post for every post it might be kind of annoying for your readers, or discourage readers from reading what it beyond the first part.
