I teach research skills to 6th graders and the general rule is that if it is someone else's words exactly, you quote it, and cite it, whenever possible get actual permission depending on the medium. If it is an idea or concept that did not originate in your own head, you don't quote it, but give credit either parenthetically or in a footnote, depending on the style of writing going on. In a blog, I give credit within the paragraph.

I'm totally for truth, honesty, and accountability! Even if that makes me out as big ol' idiot or stirs up some controversy ;)

And for the whole "stealing" other's content and what not - that's just plain wrong, and it'll catch up to them eventually. But hopefully they're reading blogs like this!

I also try to link back unless I found the info on my own. I would rather site my source than appear to be "stealing" info.

I don't link back if I get info via email, or if I do my own research and find the info on my own (at coupons.com or somewhere like that, for example).

I know how I feel when I come across something that might have been mine (and was copied) and I would never want someone to have that same feeling when reading my blog.

I try to link whenever possible. There are times when I forget where I heard about something originally but I try to find it.

If I get an email with the same coupon code or get a message from a PR person with the same information, I don't link to anyone, though.

I can't think of a time when linking back to your source is wrong. I always try to do that, and if I can't remember where I read something, I am honest about that too. If the idea wasn't mine, I don't want credit for it.

This is a good topic, Angie. When I studied communications, this kind of thing was drilled into our heads daily. If you find an idea that is clearly NOT yours, you need to site it. If you find something that you could find on your own, such as a free shipping code or a coupon, you don't need to link back, but it is a nice thing to do. When in doubt, just link back. The original blogger will appreciate it and do the same for you.
